Literacy Narrative Examples - Teaching Kids How to Tell StoriesStories can be many different things, but the point is that they are usually taught to students through writing, especially literacy narrative examples. In many cases, when a class is teaching a literacy narrative example, they are going to be writing their own version of the story, which is something that has become the staple of the curriculum.When teachers are teaching their stories using examples, it makes them feel more engaged and encouraged to write their own versions. If you were writing your own version of the story, you would have a better understanding of what it is that makes the story the way that it is. Jackson and his supporters convinced themselves, and many Americans, that they were, in fact, protectors of American ideals. Through the effective use of these dramatic techniques; Neil Armfield was successful in creating a realistic portrayal of Ray Lawler’s Summer of the Seventeenth Doll. The 1950’s style setting created on stage, using the set design, props and costumes was highly effective in producing a realistic and believable production. Not only did the set effectively add to the authenticity of the production, it also gave the actors important sentimental effects to use throughout the performances. The 17 cane dolls which lined the walls of the house had great symbolic qualities and were effective in the development of depth within the play. Olive’s dolls were not only gifts from her summer love, but symbolic representations of her past and the constrictive manner in which she clung to this fading lifestyle . Costuming was skilfully used in The Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, all items of costuming were true to the era and gave further insight into each character. For example the costuming of Pearl as opposed to Olive’s symbolised their different personalities and their past; Pearl wore upper class clothing; whereas Olive’s attire was unadorned. The free flowing and well-worn clothes of Olive gave the audience insight into her thoughts and way of life. They represented her openness and simple way of life. The floral prints and looseness of the dresses she wore showed she didn’t have a care in the world; this can be concluded because she never greatly changed her appearance in order to impress anyone. In comparison, Pearl’s attire was very different; though still used to create depth in much the same manner. The tightness of her clothing symbolised the way Pearl held information of her past, close and hid some parts completely. Also noteworthy is the style of the clothing she wore. Always being dressed to dine as it were, Pearl seemed to being putting up a facade by the way she dressed; while on the outside she seemed glamorous and sophisticated, she was suffering from intense internal struggle. Not only was costuming and set design used ffectively, the implementation of sensory stimulus and lighting was also successful in creating a scene audience members could relate to. During breakfast the smell of bacon could be smelt by members of the audience and this added another dimension to the performance. In allowing the audience to not only hear and know that bacon was cooking but also smell it, a highly realistic ambiance was created. A subtle but effective technique used in the play was lighting. As each day began or night fell, the light in the house would slowly fade, so to resemble that of any normal day. However on the Summer of the Seventeenth Doll set, this was done to such an extent that the audience saw no visible change at any particular point, mimicking the subtlety of natural light growth or diminishment. Throughout Summer of The Seventeenth Doll relationships develop, change and end. The first of these is the relationship between Olive and Roo. At the beginning of their performance, both Roo and Olive are very much in love; Olive waits with baited breath to greet her summer love and takes great pleasure in describing how the encounter will occur. In doing this she very quickly and effectively enlightens the audience about the past sixteen summers. This highlighted the routine of the summers, for the past sixteen years everything had always stayed the same; giving the audience context as to why the change Olive is affected so much. Each of the characters had different relationships with one another, which emphasized the effective use of the human context within the elements of drama. Olive and Pearl had a somewhat odd friendship at the beginning of the play, Olive tried desperately to make her standard of life seem fit to the much more classy Pearl. However as their situations unfold, it is made clear that much of this ‘class’ in Pearl is surface level only. We learn her husband has left her and she has a problem daughter. After learning this Olive seems to warm much more easily to Pearl, possibly reflecting Olive’s insecurity around people of a higher class. Neil Armfield was highly successful in implementing the elements of drama, especially those of movement, mood, language and tension. All characters within Summer of the Seventeenth Doll created realistic mood to portray their respective characters. As the summer progressed, the mood changed dramatically, from the bubbly highs of the first meeting, demonstrated mainly by Olive’s nervous excitement in the moments before the arrival of Roo and Barney; to the depressive goodbye demonstrated again by Olive when she clears the entire house. When juxtaposed to the mood of the previous sixteen summers, the audience was able to see from the beginning that this summer was going to be different; through strong use of mood it was clear that this would be the last of the summers. While movement was in the most part realistic, the actors did lapse in this area occasionally; this was most evident in the fight scene between Roo and Barney. However the most prominent dramatic element used by the actors was tension. Upon returning from the cane fields Roo and Barney had underlying tension in their relationship. Roo was hiding something from Olive, which Barney thought he should share. This in part was the begining of the end; as it symbolised the loss of openness and love. Equally, we see the development of the character Bubba, whom at first appears to be very naive. Despite this we see her develop a different relationship with her neighbours and slowly begin to see them in a new more judgmental light. Bubba’s development is most evident in when she goes next door to ask why they are not going out on New Year’s Eve. Not only did this highlight the development of Bubba, but the downhill slide of the seventeenth summer, as it becomes less and less like it used to be. It was also indicated through her reaction to her introduction to Jonny; here Bubba’s real views on life were expressed and the feelings she was beginning to have towards Roo and Barney. Relationships in Summer of the Seventeenth Doll are key in the central idea of the performance and the QTC was successful in portraying these complex human emotions. The sub plots in Summer of the Seventeenth Doll were crucial to the development of a realistic performance. Over the course of the play sub plots developed and continued. One of these was that of the relationship between Roo and Barney. This enlightened the audience of underlying happenings in the cane fields of the preceding winter. Before Roo confronted Olive, an argument between himself and Barney brought to the attention of the audience that something was amiss. Crucial to the performance this enlightenment gives the audience enough background knowledge to make judgements on each character and the play as a whole. In addition to this sub-plot, the character of Emma was fundamental in the overview of the performance. Emma held the point of view of someone who knew exactly what was going on as well as knowing the people very well. Her role was important especially in the development of Olive’s character, because he was her mother, Emma knew Olive inside out and was able to offer her guidance and support. This was done in such a way that positioned the audience to think this summer was not the first to be plagued with problems and this can be said because Emma always held a note of frustration in her voice when conveying her wisdom. It is this and other sub plots that tie the main plot together and gave i t realistic appeal. Summer of the Seventeenth Doll by Ray Lawler was powerful in its conveyance of dramatic realism through the conventions of Drama coupled with the visual and sensory aesthetics of the production. The skilful employment of the elements of drama; human context; language, movement, mood and dramatic tension, lead to a credible performance from all actors. Through well thought out and traditional set design and costume; combined with superior lighting, audience members were given an authentic and aesthetically pleasing show to watch. Overall the QTC’s production of Summer of the Seventeenth Doll was highly effective in creating a realistic and believable performance and giving all audience members a memorable night out.

The Color Purple The Color Purple, by Alice Walker, is a very intense book to read. By intense, I mean it is a book touching very difficult and hard aspects of life of a poor, black oppressed woman in the early twentieth century. Walker does social criticism in her novel, mostly criticizing the way black women were treated in the early twentieth century. Walker uses the life experiences of Celie to illustrate her social criticism. The Color Purple is not written in the style of most novels. The author does not tell us everything about the characters, the setting, and why the characters behave the way they do. The novel is written in a series of letters, not dated. There are large gaps between some letters, but this is not revealed by the author; we have to figure it out ourselves. The letters are written in what Walker calls black folk language, which also reduces the easiness of the reading. When the novel opens, Celie is a young black girl living in Georgia in the early years of the twentieth century. She in an uneducated girl, and writes her letters in common language. Celie is entering her adolescence believing she was raped by her father and that he killed both of their children. She writes to God, because she has no one else to write to. She feels that what happened to her is so terrible that she can only talk about it to someone she feels loves her. She knows her sister Nettie loves her, but she is too young to understand. Celie believe only to God may she talk honestly and openly about her suffering. Celie is not, however, at this point, complaining to God, she is simply confiding in him. Celie was born into a poor family; her mother was sick most of the time, mentally and physically; there were too many children in the family; and Celie was abused by the man she believed was her father. Celie feels used and abused, but does not understand why. So many bad things have happened to Celie that she lacks self esteem and confidence. Celie does not even feel she is worth enough to sign her name at the end of the letters. Slowly, Celie evolves into a mature woman with great confidence, but not before her sister Nettie is taken away from her, and she marries a cruel man who really wanted to marry Nettie. For a long time, Celie is almost a slave to her husband, until her husband's mistress comes to live with them to recuperate from a sickness, and Celie becomes her nurse. Shug is a strong woman, and encourages Celie to grow stronger. At the same time, Sofia, Celie's daughter in law, shows Celie to stand up for herself and fight prejudice and injustice, and fight. By the end of the novel, Celie's new strength pays off, because she is able to live happily with the people she loves. She reunites with Nettie and her two children, who have been raised by Nettie. Celie learned to fight, to stand up for herself, and she was rewarded. Celie was able to survive physically and spiritually, and is able to mature into a full, modern twentieth century woman. In The Color Purple, Alice Walker is able to illustrate the abuse, neglect, and oppression a black woman had to go through in the early twentieth century, but she also illustrate how a woman must fight back to regain the self esteem and confidence lost way back in the early adolescent years. What kind of experiences do you have to go through before you are labeled as the â€Å"Baddest Man on the planet†? What people don’t understand is the life style and background in which Mike Tyson grew up in. The surroundings meaning the streets, the gangs and the era of drugs kicked in and kicked in enough that teens were aware of what was on the streets and how to get it. Every person is different and no matter what the case is if you don’t have the proper parenting and descent area to live in then chances of you engaging in crimes are very high. Mike Tyson got lucky with the talent that he had but if not found and trained the way he was then he would have committed worse acts than the ones committed to this day. He made the best out of his talents but it goes to show you that money, fame and your athletic abilities won’t hide where you came from and the life you once lived not too long ago. Mike Gerard Tyson was born of June 30th, 1966 in Brooklyn, New York from the parents of Jimmy Kirkpatrick and Lorna Tyson. Sadly only after two years together Mikes Father decided it was too much for him to handle and left his mother with little Mike. Mikes mother didn’t have a lot of riches. It was hard for her to come up with money so they moved to a town in Brownsville, New York where unfortunately was known for their high crime rate. Mike was a very shy small kid. He also was the target of bullying from older kids and other distractions around the way. To add insult to injury Mike began developing his own style of street fighting. Building his experience of being a criminal, the mentality is what drives you to continue committing crimes. Once you have felt that feeling even when you get rid of that criminal feeling it will still be in the back of your mind waiting for another chance to take over. Gang banging is a parent’s worst nightmare. Not knowing right from wrong and the lack of discipline was the problem with Mike. Lacking a father figure hurts emotionally and mentally. Mike joined a gang around his neighborhood called the Jolly Stompers. A name with the ability to speak for itself, kids that enjoying committing crime. Committing robberies with the older members and giving mike assignments like cleaning out the cash register when victims are held at gun point. A kid doing this at an age you would be never guess, 11. This was a kid that often ran in contact with the police over his small petty criminal activities and by the age of 13 Mike was arrested an astounding 30 times. Mike Tyson’s horrible behavior gave him a boot out of his public school and into a reform school in upstate New York. Although it was a tough time for Mike something great came out of leaving the school in where he came from. Mike met a counselor by the name of Bob Stewart who had previously been an amateur boxing champion. Mike made a decision which could have been the turning point of his life by asking Bob if he could train him how to use his fist but with every offer comes a sacrifice. Mike would have to stay out of trouble and do better in school. Two things that are expected out of kids that go to school. Mike did so and was determined to learn it all when it comes to the boxing life. There was one other man by the name of Constantine â€Å"Cus† D’Amato who was a legendary boxing manager. DAmato was known for taking personal interest in promising fighters and he immediately recognized Tysons ambition to be a heavyweight contender, telling him, If you want to stay here, and if you want to listen, you could be the world heavyweight champion someday. (Mike Tysons Biography) Tyson agreed to stay. Constantine not only was his manager but also turned into this father figure that he never had. Cus took Mike under his wing and made sure to his best ability that he would succeed and be one of the best ever. It was around the early 80’s when Mike had entered into DAmatos full-time custody finally someone else than his mother cared about the fatherless kid. But 2 years later in 1982 Mike Tyson’s life would take a turn for the worst when his mother pasted away. A feeling no person wants to go through but has to at one point. One of the greatest debuts in boxing history came when the much anticipated Mike Tyson went against the strong and experienced Hector Mercedes. A quick one and done in the 1st round gave him his 1st hit and the image of an experienced champion. With the help of his two trainers and his work ethic in and out of the boxing ring gave Mike possibly felt the best he has ever felt in a while. This gave Tyson the ability to level his opponents quick in the 1st round, and that earned him the nickname Iron Mike. On November 4, 1985, DAmato died of pneumonia. Tyson was heavily hit by the death of the man he considered his blood father. Boxing trainer Kevin Rooney took over DAmatos coaching duties and less than two weeks later, Tyson continued on the path that DAmato had laid out for him. It goes to show you that guidance and support from people you love and love you back helps you move on to the next obstacle in your life regardless if they are there physically or emotionally. Tyson never fully recovered from the loss and many around the world blamed that to the boxers future behavior problems With the record of a true champion but no titles yet came an opportunity to flip that around. 22-0 with 21 knockouts gave him a title shot against Trevor Berbick for the World Boxing Council heavyweight championship. Tyson knocked out Berbick in the 2nd round making him the new WBC heavyweight champion. Also making him the youngest heavyweight champion of all time, Mike Tyson also gained to more belts and quickly gaining the respect of many. With fame did come some negative distractions to Tyson’s career. Tyson’s life from childhood delinquency to boxing champ put him in the center of the spotlight were most people don’t know how to handle the pressure. Mike became partying harder than ever and hanging with Hollywood stars that he didn’t belong with. Slowly after life as a superstar kicked in everything started to go sour for mike in the worst way. June 1988 both his wife and his manager wanted out of Mikes life as well wanted in on Mike’s money. Mike behavior got worse and worse after getting into street brawls and nearly killing himself by committing suicide trying to crash into the late D’Amato’s home. His family life was getting to the point of no return after his marriage being called â€Å"Pure Hell† by his wife Givens. You would think that one would learn their lesson but mike came back to criminal acts to later be sued by two women after being grabbed and insulted by Tyson. February 11, 1990 a date never to remember if you are a fan of Iron Mike Tyson. His first lose also his first time ever being knocked out by an underdog boxer named Buster Douglas. This fight changed the boxing world and stirred up so much noise about the loss but Mike still had other issues he had to deal with as well. More trouble came after Mike had also lost another fight not in the ring but in the court the day of November 1, 1990 several months after his 1st lose in his career. Mike Tyson was found guilty for both his incidents in his bathroom incident in 88’ and then soon in 91’ when e was accused of raping a Miss Black American contestant. Mike Tyson was ordered to jail for 6 years due to the law of Indiana it also had to be effective as soon as possible. The death of his father didn’t really faze Mike Tyson nor did he really care to take a leave from prison to take part at the funeral. It shows how much hate and disappointment Mike has from that event al one. He is a man of his own and everything he learned was from his own mind due to the fact that his whole life was a mission to find who he really is. He never really gave himself the chance to change because of all the events that occurred during the process of his life expanding. After six years of marriage, second wife Monica Turner filed for divorce  in 2003, on grounds of adultery. That same year, he also filed for bankruptcy after his exorbitant spending, multiple trials, and bad investments caught up with him. Tysons hard-partying ways caught up with him again in late 2006. Tyson was arrested in Scottsdale, Arizona, after almost crashing into a police cruiser. Mike was suspected of driving while intoxicated. Soon after that assumption police pulled Tyson over and searched his car. During the search police discovered cocaine throughout the vehicle. On September 24, 2007, Mike Tyson pleaded guilty to possession of narcotics and driving under the influence. So much of Mike Tyson’s life has been taken away due to the fame and fortune but also from all the bad decisions he made as well. You can’t always get what you want and I feel as if he didn’t act the way he did during every incident he would be fine to this day. Tysons life seemed to mellow over the next few years, and the boxer began seeking sobriety by attending (AANA) Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings. But in 2009, Tyson was dealt another blow when his four-year-old daughter, Exodus, accidentally strangled herself on a treadmill cord in her mothers Phoenix home. The tragedy  was yet another dark period in Tysons troubled life I want to leave you with a quote said by Mike Tyson that is real and from the heart. Something said due to experience and growth with life aging away from him so quick. The quote goes (Bad Intentions, The Mike Tyson Story) My whole life has been a waste Ive been a failure. I just want to escape. Im really embarrassed with myself and my life. I want to be a missionary. I think I could do that while keeping my dignity without letting people know they chased me out of the country. I want to get this part of my life over as soon as possible. In this country nothing good is going to come of me. People put me so high; I wanted to tear that image down.
